Originally published in 1967, Frederick has been a favorite for many-a-child, teacher, parent, and all those in between.
Frederick watches the other mice preparing for the winter. During all of their hurried ways, Frederick sits still with his eyes, ears, and mind open for the gifts that can’t be stored away for the winter in a mouse’s storage bin. Frederick accumulates gifts that cannot be held with one’s hands either. During the bleakest part of winter’s longing, Frederick shines for he has stored up special parts and pieces of the three other seasons to brighten and lighten this time of year.
Mr. Lionni illustrated this book as he did all of his many others. He used a mixed media and paint to make his characters come alive, endearing them to our hearts.

Leo Lionni is just a real favorite author of mine so you may be seeing more reviews on his very special books.
Leo Lionni wrote and illustrated many books. He was born in the Netherlands in 1910, lived in Italy, came to the United States in 1939 where he worked in advertising, doing commissioned art, and then as art director of Fortune until 1960 when he returned to Tuscany, Italy. There he began his career as a children’s book author and illustrator. He died in 1999 at the age of 89 at his home near Radda in Chianti district, Italy.
Although he was not formally educated in art, (received a doctorate in economics from the University of Genoa), he taught himself to draw while wandering through art museums in Holland. He was an internationally known designer, illustrator, and graphic artist, the recipient of the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was honored posthumously in 2007 with the Society of Illustrators’ Lifetime Achievement Award. His over 40 picture books are distinguished by their enduring moral themes, graphic simplicity and brilliant use of collage, and include four Caldecott Honor Books: Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse.
